Celebrating Ida Tarbell -- and the 104th Anniversary of the BREAK-UP of Standard Oil!!!

"Tarbell's biggest obstacle, however, was neither her gender nor Rockefeller's opposition. Rather, her biggest obstacle was the craft of journalism as practiced at the turn of the twentieth century. She investigated Standard Oil and Rockefeller by using documents—hundreds of thousands of pages scattered throughout the nation—and then amplified her findings through interviews with the corporation's executives and competitors, government regulators, and academic experts past and present. In other words, she proposed to practice what today is considered investigative reporting, which did not exist in 1900. Indeed, she invented a new form of journalism.[1]
And then, in an inspirational tale for journalists, Ida Tarbell went to work. Her History of the Standard Oil Company spotlighted Rockefeller's practices and mobilized the public. Readers nationwide awaited each chapter of the story, serialized in 19 installments by McClure's between 1902 and 1904.[14]"

>>> SINCE MY KENAN RELATIVES NOW CONTROL EXXON-MOBIL (at least), I HAVE A SPECIAL PERSPECTIVE!!!:

1. To begin with, there are MANY conflicting reports of the founding of Standard Oil, but the truth seems to be that Henry Flagler founded it, then soon took on Rockefeller and his first father-in-law, Harkness as equal partners. Over the years, Flagler got back control of much of the Harkness portion, giving him the lion's share of stock.

2. John D. Rockefeller always claimed that Henry Flagler was FAR smarter than he, and in turn, Flagler (who always claimed he visualized everything he wanted to build right down to the bricks and nails -- identical to creative processes taught in Science of Mind and the 200+ years old Presbyterian writings I read at Liberty Hallhttp://theweathercontinues.blogspot.mx/2015/05/a-message-of-appreciation-to-first.html), always said William Rand Kenan, Jr., was a FAR better businessman than was he!!!

"Will" Kenan in old age. I dealt with him, partially, just yesterday, here: http://theweathercontinues.blogspot.mx/2015/05/email-to-widow-of-dr-j-kennedy-shultz.html

And here is more info on William R. Kenan, Jr.:

"Following Flagler's death in 1913, Kenan successfully guided the vast network of Flagler businesses, as well as his own flourishing enterprises, through a tumultuous period that saw two world wars, a speculative land boom, and a Depression

This biography offers new insights into Kenan's many successes as well as his disappointments, particularly his keen sense of having lived his life in the shadow of others." More: http://uncpress.unc.edu/books/T-58.html

3. But going back further, the Kenan Family had clear-cut S.E. North Carolina's virgin pine forests, becoming the WORLD'S largest supplier of naval stores -- before the Revolutionary War (hence the "Tar Heels" name for teams at UNC), having 1 - 3 properties (I never found which number for certain), with over 300 African slaves -- and the need to keep moving to the edge of the forest kept them from building a HUGE manor house.

The Kenans spread out from North Carolina to settle also in South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Florida, and held many high political positions as well as being socially and financially prominent -- and I have seen they were a STRONG force for Secession.

4. At the time of the break-up of Standard Oil in 1911, Henry Flagler was quite feeble, and William R. Kenan, Jr. handled all of that for him.

A dog, Mr. Flagler, and a servant.

And the funny thing is that the Kenans all knew Flagler was leaving it all to Mary Lily (Kenan) Flagler, and in the year that FOLLOWED the break-up into 34 separate companies, the STOCK of all those new companies rose OVER 100% in value -- because the PUBLIC LOVED what had happened -- and the Kenans were set to inherit TWICE as much as they had expected in 1910!!!

5. Today, Thomas S. Kenan III, and his father's second wife and widow Betty (Price) Kenan hold the "Kenan Reins" of the companies and the Charitable Trusts.

A typical Episcopalian sycophant, Betty in Chinese brocade and holding a puppy, and Tom, a-drinkin'.

6. Of course the MORAL of the story is that the thing you fear MOST (breaking up of your monopoly), can benefit you MOST via the Law of Unintended Consequences!!!

In THIS case, they got BETTER consequences!!!

7. I just found it odd, that today, the Flagler Museum put out this Facebook Posting. I added it to the bottom of the previous posting AFTER I emailed it out, so I'll post it again:

LOOK!!! The Kenan-Endowed Henry Flagler Museum is PROPAGANDIZING that the break-up of Standard Oil was "overzealous" -- and they got a Republican Roosevelt to run to fix things -- LOL!!!

  • Scott Kenan From Henry Morrison Flagler Museum: "On this date in 1911, the case of Standard Oil of New Jersey v. United States resulted in Standard Oil Trust being declared an “unreasonable” monopoly under the Sherman Antitrust Act. President Taft’s over-zealous prosecution of trusts caused Teddy Roosevelt to come out of retirement to run again for president."

8. And FINALLY, I am now in conversation (of sorts), with the Kennedy Foundation:

to Kennedy, bcc: scottdkenan,

Sure -- if you will explain who you actually are. I was Tennessee Williams's last assistant and Jackie Kennedy Onassis told us at a party on January 11, 1982 that the CIA, FBI, Episcopal Church, and Republican Party would murder him and steal his estate from Harvard -- which I can PROVE they actually DID.

You could check my Tennessee Williams credentials with John Lahr, and my Patriot credentials with Gen. Russel Honore, BOTH of whom I met with recently in New Orleans.

Thanks,
Scott
